The Washington Park neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side is set to come alive with color, creativity, and community spirit at the unveiling of a groundbreaking augmented reality (AR) mural. The event, taking place on October 5, 2024, promises a full day of programming designed to engage and inspire residents and visitors alike.

The centerpiece of the event is the unveiling of a stunning AR mural that merges art and technology, allowing participants to interact with the artwork using their smartphones. This innovative piece not only beautifies the Washington Park area but also celebrates the rich cultural history and dynamic future of the Southside.

“We’re excited to bring this unique blend of art and technology to the South Side, specifically the Washington Park community,” said Brandon Breaux, Arts and Activation Curator. “This mural is more than a refreshing visual experience; it’s an invitation for people to connect with the neighborhood and its history in a deeper way.”

In addition to the mural unveiling, the event will feature a diverse lineup of activities:

• 10:00 am -  Morning Yoga and Meditation: Start the day with a sense of peace and mindfulness in a guided yoga and meditation session. Taking place at 10am at the mural site w/ @breathingyogaworks
• Sound Experience and Breathwork: Close out your yoga session for the day with a sonic experience and meditation with BSA Gold and artist Brandon Breaux. (@bsa.gold - @thebreaux)
• Noon - Mental Health and the Hood Panel: Listen and reflect as Chicago-based community leaders and experts discuss how our environment impacts our mental health. 12:00 at Green Line Arts Center just steps from the mural site.
• 2-3:30 pm - Floral Design Workshop: Channel your inner artist by creating beautiful floral arrangements, perfect for bringing a touch of nature into your home. 1:45pm at the mural site
• 2:30 - 3:30 pm - Crochet Workshop: Learn some basics about the beautiful craft of crocheting with the talented fiber artist/fashion designer Chelsea B (@chelseab128). Spots are limited, participants must RSVP. 1:45p at the mural site
• All day - Photo Booth: Capture the moment with friends and family at our photo booth, where the mural comes to life in your pictures

This event is free and open to the public, offering a welcoming space for all ages to come together and celebrate the vibrant spirit of the Washington Park neighborhood.

The unveiling will take place at 5536 S King Drive at 12pm/noon. Attendees are encouraged to bring their smartphones and headphones to fully experience the augmented reality features of the mural.
